Counselling gives you the time and space to explore your problem with someone else.  Together, you can examine how you react and how you feel about it.  You participate in finding solutions which you are comfortable with implementing.  It is person-focussed and non-judgemental so your counsellor will not think badly of you no matter what you tell them or how you as an individual respond to certain situations.

Counselling helps you analyse your problem and identify workable solutions.  It often helps you understand yourself and discover why there may be personal barriers to solutions:-

  • What are your emotional responses?
  • Do you experience any resistance to certain aspects of resolution?
  • Have you had any other difficult situations or problems to resolve?

Counselling will promote re-thinking and re-deciding.  It aims to help you arrive at conclusions or solutions that resolve the situation and move life forward.  This may involve developmental challenge to your thinking or developmental change to your behaviour.  Everything is open for discussion in order to discover how to bring an end to the anxiety / stress / distraction / lack of sleep / depression you may be feeling because - for whatever reason - you are unable to resolve the problem on your own.

Counselling may take quite a bit of time and commitment but asking for help and support is your first positive step towards resolution.
